Savernake Nannies recently conducted a poll in its Nanny Café Facebook group to establish which, if any, trade or industry associations Nannies belong to.
Question: 'Do you belong to an association/trade union?'
Of 190 nannies eligible to vote, only 11 did. Their replies:
BAPN - 5 votes
Pacey - 2 votes
Voice - 0 votes
None - 4 votes
As we didn’t ask further questions, we know how strapped for time nannies are, we’re unable to understand the reasoning behind the responses and even more so by the low number participating, particularly as it was just a one-question survey!
At Savernake Nannies we consider membership of an association invaluable and as an agency, it is reassuring to know we can signpost our nannies to associations who, unlike nanny agencies, are insured to give advice. So, we asked BAPN, PACEY, and Voice to let us know why they believe Nannies should join them and we’ve reproduced their responses here:
Received from BAPN:
There are numerous benefits to joining BAPN and it’s going to be difficult to keep it short, but here goes.
So, what do you get for less than the price of a coffee and a cake per month from the ONLY ‘nanny specific membership association’ in the UK?

Received from Voice
Unfortunately, things can go wrong at work when you least expect it, and when it
does, like all employees, nannies need good timely advice and support to resolve
issues and disputes.
As nannies are employed directly by parents and work in the home of the children
they care for, they are especially vulnerable and therefore require the support and
representation of a friendly and approachable union should things go wrong.
Voice is the union for education professionals. We work tirelessly to represent
nannies, ensuring that our members receive the advice, support, and guidance of a
strong, yet reasonable and approachable, union to represent them.
Everybody has a right to be heard, and Voice is dedicated to providing a
personalised service to each of our members, ensuring your employment rights are
maintained and enabling you to get the most out of your career, safe in the
knowledge that Voice, your union, is here to support you.
At Voice, we respect and promote equality, ensuring that diversity is valued and that
everyone is treated the same across the childcare sector.
Union membership has never been more important, especially with the uncertainty
surrounding COVID-19, so we have created Coronavirus guidance along with FAQs
to help anyone working in childcare understand their rights and responsibilities
during the pandemic.
The membership rate varies – depending on the number of hours worked F/T P/T etc. It is free in the first year after qualifying and half price in the second year. All the details are on the website – here is the direct long link to the rates
