Care for the children organised, what about day to day expenses?

There are many things to consider when organising care for your children. Nannies are the most flexible of all childcare options, with one to one care of your child in your own home by the person of your choosing.

When you start to look for a nanny, you need to spend time considering your family’s needs. Being clear about the kind of nanny you are looking for at the beginning will make it easier for you to find your ideal person.

The success of care for your children in your own home depends on finding a good match between the nanny, the children, and the family generally.

It’s a great relief once this is organised, with the nanny providing a safe and loving environment and taking responsibility for the development of the children.

How can the nanny help beyond looking after the children?

Generally, a nanny will do ‘Nursery Duties’ only, meaning they will be responsible for children’s laundry, cooking and keeping their bedrooms clean and tidied.

They will plan fun and educational activities, and some of these will be out of the home, particularly during nursery and school holidays. Although nannies should not be expected to do weekly shops, it is reasonable to ask them to buy some essentials, for instance nappies or milk, if you are running low. This does mean additional expenses.

Payment for additional expenses

It’s a good idea if parents factor in the cost of a weekly kitty to cover child related expenses such as activities and any shopping needed. How best to organise payment, though, particularly for unexpected expenses?

Cash is one option but often not the easiest to organise or control, and during Covid, many shops are reluctant to take cash for handling reasons. Nannies can ‘pay and reclaim’ if necessary, though leaving them out of pocket for a period of time is not ideal. Lending a credit or debit card is a possibility but that’s not a comfortable situation for anyone.

A good new payment option

Prepaid cards seem to be a suitable option because they do not allow credit and spend can only be to the limit of the money that is loaded on the card.

There’s one that particularly fits the bill, Carercard from a company called Hestian.

Carercard is a Mastercard prepaid card and has been designed for care, as the safe and easy way for nannies and carers to pay for shopping and additional expenses. You load funds onto the card and top up on a planned basis.

Parents control spending and can track the card balance and all payments online at any time, on the Carercard portal.

At the moment, to help during COVID, you can try Carercard for three months subscription free and see the benefits for yourself. Then you can continue using and pay a monthly subscription or stop. After three months, a subscription of £7 per month is charged from the card balance.

If you’re interested, find out more from the Carercard website or call on 0800 808 5491.
